Spring Break Beyond the Beach: Unique Destinations for Families

Spring break is quickly approaching, and it’s one of the trips I look forward to most each year with my kids. By this time of year, I’m itching to take them somewhere exciting—often to escape the cold, though not always. Whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights or exploring a destination with milder weather and fewer crowds, March and April are perfect times to travel.

Last April, we explored Croatia and Montenegro, and I went in with zero expectations. To my surprise, it ended up being one of the best trips we’ve ever taken. In Croatia, we were greeted by warm weather and took the chance to go cliff jumping—a highlight for my kids. Then, as we ventured into Montenegro’s mountains, we drove through a tunnel and emerged in a winter wonderland. The beauty and hospitality we experienced in Montenegro were unforgettable, and it remains one of my top recommendations for travel in any season.

As a travel designer, I love introducing my clients to destinations they might not initially consider for their vacations. Spring break doesn’t have to mean a traditional beach escape. I challenge you to think beyond the norm—there are so many destinations where you can relax, recharge, or even find a bit of adventure. Here are five unique recommendations to consider:

1. Portugal

Portugal is one of my all-time favorite destinations. It remains a hidden gem in Europe, especially for those on the East Coast. With direct flights from Boston and New York, mild spring weather, and fewer crowds, Portugal is perfect for spring break. Lisbon is full of vibrant neighborhoods, historical landmarks, and delicious cuisine. You can easily explore the fairy-tale palaces of nearby Sintra or head to Porto for wine tasting along the riverside. Many of my clients opt for a split stay between Lisbon and the Algarve Coast for a mix of city and seaside relaxation.

2. Montenegro

A true hidden gem, Montenegro is perfect for families looking for a unique spring break. Known as the “Land of Mountains,” Montenegro offers stunning scenery and fantastic value. I recommend splitting your time between the dramatic mountains in the north and the beautiful coastline. Spring offers a warm climate, with the possibility of dipping into the Adriatic Sea. Montenegro’s charm, natural beauty, and warm hospitality make it a standout destination.

3. Croatia

Beat the summer crowds by visiting Croatia in the spring. April brings longer days and warmer weather, making it an ideal time to explore this stunning country. Wander the historic streets of Dubrovnik or Split, enjoy breathtaking coastal views, and take in Croatia’s rich history and culture—all without the hustle of peak tourist season.

4. Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

If you’re staying stateside, Santa Fe offers a unique and enriching experience. Known for its vibrant art scene, rich Native American culture, and striking desert landscapes, Santa Fe is perfect for families or couples looking to explore something new. Highlights include browsing Native American jewelry markets, soaking in hot springs, and admiring adobe architecture.

5. Nicaragua

For adventurous families, Nicaragua is an incredible spring break destination. Known for its natural beauty and laid-back vibe, it offers a mix of volcano trekking, charming colonial towns, and pristine lakes. Whether you’re hiking, kayaking, or simply relaxing, Nicaragua delivers adventure and tranquility in equal measure.

Where will spring break take you this year? Whether it’s mountains, deserts, or vibrant cities, these destinations offer something extraordinary for every type of traveler.
